Pete suggested yesterday that we go out to Estes Park this weekend to see the bighorn sheep and elk. On the Rocky Mountain National Park website, they say the sheep and elk have headed down the mountain already to escape the snow.
So we packed up the kids and made the 1 1/2 drive to Estes Park. It is seriously one of the most beautiful, easiest drives ever. We visited Estes Park last summer and loved it so we were very excited for the opportunity to do it again.
We started out the day by going to the playground then visiting the wine shop across the bridge. Thomas kept demanding we go to the wine shop (because he wanted juice) but it sounded really bad in front of all of those parents with their toddlers. We went to the winery and ordered a glass of wine to drink down by the river. The boys skipped rocks and climbed boulders and eventually headed into the river for what appeared to be "gold". We, of course, as good parents (and also a little tipsy) encouraged them to do so. The river in Estes Park is ice cold in the dead of summer so its definitely not warm when there is still a little snow on the ground.
They were not successful collecting the fool's gold but we did take pictures of them trying.
After our leisurely beginning, we walked on main street to get the kids candy and then headed into the national park. The ranger informed us there was no chance we would see elk or sheep because, like humans, they can't tolerate strong winds. We took a little drive in the park then headed back to Boulder.
Each of my children is so different from the other and they are really embracing their new life here. It always is nice to have a small trip away from home to understand what you love about each member of your family. Its also nice to come home.
