Crazy luck

Tuesday, March 29

Today I asked the kids to do chalk drawings of the things they would like the most.  Parker drew a picture of a frog because he has been begging to go down to the creek near our house and catch some animals.  Ever since we moved into the house, he has been out in the yard collecting whatever he can find.

He drew a rather nice picture of a frog.  He then brought his net and cage inside for me to see and take pictures of him with these things.  We had dinner and Pete was taking the kids upstairs for a bath.  On the way to the steps, Parker passed by his cage and said, "How did that big spider get inside?"  Peter looks inside and considers opening the cage to smoosh it.  He asks me what spider has an orange triangle on its back.  BLACK WIDOW SPIDER!

So, so lucky that the spider didn't escape in the house.  If we didn't look, I'm sure it very well could have.  We're also very lucky that Parker didn't reach his hand in there to check it out.  The kids now know to stay away from these spiders and the brown recluse.   And fire ants...  For a child who loves to collect anything he finds on the ground, Colorado is a much more dangerous place than Minnesota.
