nine candles take some time to blow out... making many wishes
I just heard an interview on NPR with Maurice Sendak, now 83,  regarding his latest book.  The title of the book is "Bumble-Ardy" about an orphaned pig who has never had a birthday party.  He tells his Aunt that he would like to have a party for his ninth birthday, so she plans a quiet dinner for two.    While she is at work, Bumble-Ardy decides to throw himself a large costume party with some rougher swine.   His aunt is not happy-  the last lines:  Aunt:  "Okay smarty, you've had your party but never again."  Bumble-ardy replies, "I promise, I swear, I won't ever turn 10."

Parker turned 9 yesterday.  I remember his first moments as if they were yesterday.  I remember almost every moment of that first week.  I clearly think of his first year, month by month, without difficulty. The blessing of your first child is you can remember details.

This little boy who only yesterday would fall asleep with his hand under the door because he didn't want to sleep in his own room and took all of the toys out of the neighbor's garage and loved tea parties and caught every animal, dangerous or not, that he was able has become a big boy who does not like to go to sleep and loves playing with legos and still catches every animal that he can but is aware of whether they will hurt him or not.

Parker is perhaps the sweetest person I have ever known.  Parker always thinks of others before himself.  He puts his brother's before himself.   If Thomas hits Parker, Parker will tell me that he did something to make Thomas want to hit him.  In fact, Parker is probably Henry's best therapist.

Parker loves legos.  He asked for his first lego set when he was 4 and now he is building the sets designed for 14 + in a day, perhaps two.  Parker also wants to be an architect when he grows up because we told him many architects still play with legos.

Parker loves to swim- he's joining the swim team this week.  He is a natural athlete but really doesn't like to watch sports.  He is really good at skateboarding and snowboarding and told me he will probably want to boulder and climb this next year.

Parker loves to watch Harry Potter and Star Wars.  He adores Roald Dahl books.  He really loves playing games on the Wii, especially the Lego games.

Hopefully, my savoring this year of Parker being nine will help slow it down- I can't believe he is almost ten.
